How do I add money to my account?
Updated over a week ago

Once you’ve opened an account, you’ll need to move enough money from your home country to pay for things like groceries, transportation, accommodations, and other living expenses. In this section, we’ll go over several ways to make a deposit.

You can add money to your Adro account through:

You can move money from:

  • A non-US bank. When you move money into Adro, it will be converted from the currency of your home country (e.g. yuan, rupees, pesos, euros) into US dollars.

  • Another US bank. This can be another US account in your name that you link to your Adro account, or you can have a friend or family member with a US account send money to your Adro account.

Currently outside the US? It can take several days for your home country bank to send money to your Adro account. Plan ahead by making a transfer now, so you can spend from your Adro account once you arrive in the US.

How long does it take for the money to show up in Adro?

The processing timelines are different for each bank/financial institution that is sending the money to Adro, especially when doing an international transfer. There is often a delay of a few days between when the money leaves your sending account, and when it shows in your Adro account. If you don't see the money immediately in Adro once it has been taken out of your other account, this is normal.

Adro does not have control over when the money arrives. This is dependent on the sending bank.

How did you move the money?

Money will typically show up in Adro within:

Through ACH transfer (including services like Flutterwave, Wise, Remitly, Western Union, etc.)

2 to 5 business days, starting the day after you initiated the transfer

Through international wire transfer

2 to 5 business days, starting the day after you initiated the transfer

Processing time for wire transfers can vary greatly depending on your bank, so it can take longer than 5 business days, although this is unlikely.

From a linked account

1 to 2 business days

If initiated prior to 2:00 PM Eastern Time, the day you initiated the transfer counts as the first business day

Add money through ACH transfer

An ACH transfer (Automated Clearing House) is a method for moving money electronically between bank accounts. It's used in various types of transactions, such as direct deposits and bill payments.

Here’s how it works:

  • Instruction: The payer (sender) tells their bank to initiate an ACH transfer.

  • Batch processing: The bank processes the transfer, along with other payments in a batch at a scheduled time, which helps reduce the bank's operating costs.

  • Reliability: ACH transfers are reliable, and a simple way for you to move money.

Historically, ACH transfers were limited to US use, but cross-border ACH options are now an affordable alternative to traditional wire transfers.

From a non-US account to Adro

This is the cheapest and quickest way to move money from your home country to your Adro account.

Companies like Flutterwave, Wise, Remitly, and Western Union are some of the popular names in this space. If you’re moving a large amount (for example, $100,000 USD) you’ll want to shop for the best rates between providers. In most cases, the fees will be clearly communicated to you upfront. Transfers typically arrive in less than 24 hours, but can sometimes take up to one week.

What you'll need to send money through ACH transfer

You'll first need to create an account through your preferred international money transfer service. Then, you'll add your current bank information (from your home country) so you can add funds to the international money transfer account.

You'll choose the amount you want to send to Adro, then add the recipient's account details (that's you!)

You'll need the following information from your Adro account to receive the transfer.

  • ACH routing number

  • Account number

  • Account type (Checking or Savings)

You can find this information by:

  1. Logging in to your Adro account

  2. Navigate to Checking or Savings account

  3. Click 'Account details'

Add money through wire transfer

If you’d rather send money through your home country bank, you can do so by using online banking, phone or visiting a branch and following their instructions. There is typically a small fee charged by the sending bank. Adro doesn't charge any fees for incoming wire transfers.

You'll need the following information from your Adro account

  • ACH routing number

  • Account number

  • Account type (Checking or Savings)

You can find this information by:

  1. Logging in to your Adro account

  2. Navigate to Checking or Savings account

  3. Click 'Account details'

In most cases, wire transfers take a few days to arrive and will be processed using the SWIFT network. This means that several banks, known as intermediaries, may be involved in the payment, and can also charge a fee.

That can mean you don’t know in advance exactly what the costs of your transfer will be, and the amount you get in the end may be less than you expect.

Here are a few reference links on how to send money internationally (also referred to as remittance):

Depending on the amount being transferred, you may also need to show government-issued photo ID, proof of residence and/or proof of the source of funds to your home country bank.

Add money through linked accounts

From a US account to Adro

No. You can only set up links from your other US bank accounts to Adro. Your other account must be from a US bank, US dollar accounts in other countries cannot be linked.

Is there a limit to how much money I can transfer through ACH or wire transfer?

You can transfer up to $100,000 USD per transaction. If you wish to deposit more than $100,000, you can make multiple transactions.

Keep in mind, outbound transfer limits can vary by country. In India, you can transfer up to $250,000 USD annually. There is no specific limit set by the Chinese government for sending money out of China. However, your bank may have its own wire transfer limits on how much you can transfer at once, daily, or monthly. If you’re sending an international wire transfer over $10,000, your bank or financial institution in China is required by law to report it directly to the relevant authorities.

We recommend asking your home country bank about any outbound transfer limits they may have.
